ResNet: Computing and Network Security - Important Notes

Important Notes - READ CAREFULLY

Please read the following information before you register for the ResNet Internet service.

1. COMPUTER DEVICE(S) ARE UP-TO-DATE WITH CRITICAL UPDATES

Computers connecting to ResNet must have all operating system critical updates to correct vulnerabilities and holes in the operating system that need to be patched and corrected.

2. ACTIVE AND UP-TO-DATE ANTI-VIRUS

If you do not have an Anti-Virus program, download and install Symantec AntiVirus that is available FREE to ResNet subscribers. Use LiveUpdate in Symantec AntiVirus to update virus definition files. If the anti-virus program does not have recent virus definitions or is expired, it will not be able to protect and clean the computer from viruses. Symantec AntiVirus is available online from the free software download page.  Refer to Symantec Antivius with LiveUpdate for instructions.

3. UNSUPPORTED WINDOWS COMPUTER SYSTEMS

Only Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, and Windows7 are supported by Microsoft for patches and Critical Updated.

Unsupported Windows operating systems will not be able to register for ResNet services.
For more information about Windows operating systems Life-Cycle Policy, please go to http://www.microsoft.com/. Please contact the computer vendor for assistance when upgrading Windows system.

4. USE A MORE SECURE AND LESS VULNERABLE BROWSER

It is suggested to use a more secure and less vulnerable browser such as Firefox whenever possible. Firefox is available at http://www.firefox.com to keep your computer safer while surfing the Internet. University Information Technology (UIT) is not responsible for the maintenance, and updates of these programs which are free on the Internet to download.

5. INFECTED COMPUTERS WILL BE BLOCKED FROM SERVICE

If a computer system becomes compromised by a virus and causes network related virus activity, the University Information Technology (UIT) will automatically remove and block the computer from active service thereby preventing it from accessing the Internet. Arrangements will have to be made in order to make sure the computer is disinfected and safe from further infections to resume ResNet service. Refer to Troubleshooting - Virus Infection

6. RESNET BANDWIDTH LIMIT

ResNet subscribers have an unlimited download and upload usage allowance.
Note: UIT reserves the right to impose usage limit and fair usage policy.
